Deductive learning on the fly- Bill Young
I had a presentation on using verbs ending in -er & -ir with my Spanish 1 class. I inserted the principle "the root of the verb tells you the action and the ending tells you who and when". Everytime we went through the endings or looked at a new example I would go back to the principle and have the students recite the words in italics back then have them show me the relative parts based on what we were looking for. I believe it re-inforced their undeerstanding of conjugating in Spanish and made the class more participatory.
I prefaced the recitation of the principle with comments like, "Now, I'm an old man and I forget easily. What aoes the root do?" or "I'm an Aggie and not the swiftest boat in the race. What does the ending tell us?". this adds a (very) little bit of humor and makes the students feel like they are helping me out (even though they really know they aren't).
You can find a key principle to re-inforce in just about any lesson you already have and it introduces your students to deductive learning with very little effort or time on your part.
Try it out!
